Gift Ideas – Sailing

Sweet treats of the holidays are definitely part of my wheelhouse, but some people really enjoy the salt air of the sea! For the intrepid sailor on your Christmas gift list, there are a variety of sailing adventures available. Certainly, these depend on your access to a river or coastline, but if you’re not near the sea you can always ship them off to an appropriate locale as part of the gift.

schoonerIf you’re like my dad, you can’t stand the snow and the cold that looks ever so scenic around the holidays. I’m a big fan of snowy days and brisk breezes, but give my father his tropical climes and palm trees for Christmas. If your loved one is like my dad, an American Sailing Tour off of Key West might be just the trip they’ve been waiting for. Their 48 foot schooner, the Summer Breeze, takes two hour cruises for six people to ensure that there is room to spread out and relax to enjoy the cruise. Their professional crew are lifelong sailors who really enjoy providing this experience for their guests.

yachtA little closer to home for me is Captain Ed Garr‘s thirty-two foot cutter, the Namaste, which sails the waters of Lake Erie. He tells us that with summer temperatures moderated by the waters of Lake Erie, spectacular sunsets, and winds higher on average than the windy city of Chicago, the area around the Port of Erie offers some of the finest sailing to be had. Whether you’re a first time passenger, or aspire to “MAN THE BOAT”, the art of sailing is at your fingertips courtesy of Captain Ed throughout the summer months. Book a summer cruise for your sailing enthusiast or even give the gift of sailing at Christmas in July.

dinner-cruiseCloser still are the dinner, lunch and brunch cruises aboard the Spirit of Philadelphia and the Freedom Elite. It’s a posh evening afloat with marvelous buffet cuisine, bottomless cups of water, tea or coffee, live entertainment and spectacular views of the Philadelphia skyline. Be aware that if you choose a dinner cruise, they require formal attire. Slacks and jackets for men and dresses, skirts or nice slacks for women are needed to board the dinner cruise. For the lunch and brunch cruises, less formal wear is permitted. Cruises last about three hours, starting off from Penn’s Landing south toward the Naval Shipyard then northward to the Ben Franklin Bridge and back again.

Check for options near your location, but these examples give some ideas of how you can give your loved ones an alternative to the odds and ends that they usually accumulate at Christmastime.
