Christmas Gift Ideas For Dad

Ask any dad what he wants for Christmas and he’ll probably tell you that he just wants his kids to be healthy, safe and happy. That being said, dads are people, too. He enjoys receiving Christmas presents as much as anyone else. Let’s take a look at what we can put under the tree for dad this Christmas.

What Kind of Dad Do You Have?

pipe-rackGrowing up, we used to get my Dad pipe tobacco. He was fond of Captain Black but there was a tobacco store at the mall that had a lot of different blends. There were some that smelled like cherry and a variety of other pleasant scents. Fortunately, he eventually gave up smoking so he’s still with us today.

My dad has always been pretty easy to get along with, so whatever we got him for Christmas was likely to be well-received. Maybe that’s just a dad thing but it’s all the better if we put some thought into the gifts we’re going to give him for Christmas.

golfSome dads have hobbies that you can cater to. If he likes fishing, golfing, bowling, building models or even gaming, you’ve got a built-in shopping list. Does he need more ties for the office or new boots for the shop? Does he need new decor for his man cave? Does he need more bling for his car or truck? Knowing your dad’s interests is a shortcut to finding the perfect gift.

Store-Bought or DIY?

I think I can speak for dads in general when I say that I really appreciate a nice, handmade gift from my kids. I really appreciate the thought and creativity that goes into a gift that our kids put together for me. Of course, that creativity can be applied to a custom-order shirt, tie or mouse pad (all of which I have joyfully received over the years). When it comes to putting together the perfect Christmas present, my wife and kids have really put their brains together over the years.

plum-puddingThere’s a very old saying that “The way to a man’s heart is through his stomach“. I couldn’t agree more. One thing that is an absolute must-have under my Christmas tree each year is Plum Pudding. Unfortunately, my wife has declared that it’s not fit for a pig, so there’s absolutely no way she’s going the homemade route. Fortunately, there are a number of premium brands available online and the best part is that I get to eat it all myself. 😸

If you’re not as handy in the kitchen as your dad is in the garage or out in the yard, you can’t go wrong hooking him up with the tools of the trade:

sandwichThat’s not really my Christmas shopping list but some dads appreciate those sorts of things. As for me, you really can’t go wrong just getting me food. I love freshly baked Christmas Cookies. I like savory holiday dishes and simple snacks of all kinds. I’m not ashamed to tell you I also love fruitcake. Food makes the holidays special for me because there’s nothing more festive than sharing a hot meal with your family on a cold day.

The Classics

New Year's EveA classic gift for men at Christmas was the trusty wrist watch but who really wears watches anymore? Frankly, I’ve been using my cell phone as a pocket watch for over a decade at this point. However, some men like their bling, so don’t overlook this traditional men’s gift idea. I’m not big on jewelry, personally, but I feel almost naked without my favorite cologne. Every guy has his own preference, so make sure you get to know what your dad’s favorite is.

Another holiday classic for dad is a stylish necktie. You can get 10% off through this link when shopping for something for your dad. When I had my desk job, I wore a tie every day so having a wide variety of ties to pick from always made my day a bit brighter. If your dad is retired or works someplace where neckties are impractical, then you might think about something more casual.

Care Package

If (like me) your dad would rather eat it than wear it, then you might want to find him the perfect gift basket to suit his tastes. For a couple of years, the family would get me a case of soda in some unusual flavor that you don’t typically see in the stores. That was always appreciated.

Another gift that never fails is the handy-dandy gift card. Guys generally don’t like shopping but they do like the convenience of being able to scoot into a store, grab what they want and walk out with it on someone else’s dime. Gift cards take one step out of the hunter-gatherer equation that is modern man’s shopping.

experienceBasically, anything that caters to dad’s comfort for the holidays is going to be well-received. Maybe he needs slippers or a robe to stay toasty down in that man cave. Maybe he needs a home entertainment system and a big screen TV. I don’t know. Depends on the dad. I’d be happy with just sitting next to my darling wife and binging Christmas movies.

When All Else Fails

In a pinch, you can google up some ideas or you could even do the radical thing and just ask him.
