Must Have Been Some Magic…

There’s something magical about snowmen. The ingredients are simple: some snow, some imagination and a few odds and ends to make facial features.

Frosty The Snowman

Frosty The Snowman
Jimmy Durante

Frosty the snowman was a jolly happy soul
With a corncob pipe and a button nose
And two eyes made out of coal
Frosty the snowman is a fairytale they say
He was made of snow but the children
Know how he came to life one day
There must have been some magic in that old silk hat they found
For when they placed it on his head
He began to dance around

Frosty the snowman
Was alive as he could be
And the children say he could laugh
And play just the same as you and me

Frosty the snowman
Knew the sun was hot that day
So he said
Let’s run and
We’ll have some fun
Now before I melt away

Down to the village
With a broomstick in his hand

Running here and there all
Around the square saying
Catch me if you can

He led them down the streets of town
Right to the traffic cop
And he only paused a moment when
He heard him holler “stop!”
Thumpity-thump-thump
Thumpity-thump-thump
Look at Frosty go
Thumpity-thump-thump
Thumpity-thump-thump
Over the hills of snow

Frosty the snowman was a jolly happy soul
With a corncob pipe and a button nose
And two eyes made out of coal

Frosty the snow man
Had to hurry on his way
But he waved goodbye saying
Don’t you cry
I’ll be back on Christmas Day!

This song was recorded in 1950 by Gene Autry & The Cass County Boys on a single for Christmastime along with the song, “When Santa Claus Gets Your Letter” on the reverse side. It was also recorded for a 1950 Christmas single by Jimmy Durante, who was featured in the 1969 holiday cartoon special as the narrator.

The cartoon is thought to take place in White Plains, NY or Armonk, NY. Armonk has taken such pride in the association that they host an annual Frosty parade!

Do You Want To Build A Snowman?

As with Anna and Elsa, building a snowman has been a part of childhood bonding for ages. Unlike Frosty and Olaf, snowmen rarely come to life and run around but with a fair amount of creativity, they certainly seem to be alive. The charm of snowmen isn’t reserved for kids. Anybody of any age can make one.

If you have a decent amount of snow that’s damp enough to pack properly, you can create a snowman no matter what age you are.  Some people prefer the classic 3 ball construction while others are fine with a sculpted cone approach.

However you get it built up, you can then finish your snowman with a few easily procured decorations. Frosty was finished “with a corncob pipe and a button nose and two eyes made out of coal“. Nowadays, we might use landscaping rocks to serve as eyes, shirt or coat buttons and even a dotted-line smile. Some snowmen are built with twigs for arms while others have arms sculpted from the snow they’re made of. Spare hats and scarves are classic add-ons for more fashionable snowmen.

The magic of snowmen is that the main ingredient simply appears and disappears at the whim of the weather. When your yard is suddenly blanketed in snow, it’s hard to resist the urge to build snowmen. You can create snowmen and forts and snow sculptures of all kinds, but when the sun gets hot again they’ll vanish as magically as the blanket of snow first arrived.
