Sofa Surfing

Up until recently, the Sunday after Thanksgiving didn’t have a designation. As change is inevitable, so was the eventual naming of the day before Cyber Monday.

Sofa Sunday

Yeah, it’s a bit lackluster but at least they didn’t settle on Cyber Monday Eve or the Day of Give It A Rest.

The notion is that shoppers will spend some time at home before the football game researching what to buy on Cyber Monday. The thing is, a lot of people have jobs to go to on Cyber Monday and Sunday is still a free day for most of them to go to the store or online to get some deals on their Christmas shopping.

I don’t know that “Sofa Sunday” will catch on any better than “Big Friday” did as an attempt to rebrand Black Friday. Maybe it will, but it suggests a passivity that doesn’t represent modern society. Sunday may have traditionally been a day of rest for Christians, but the secular majority doesn’t have time for the quaint expectations of earlier days.

Flowers For MomThe alternate understanding is that people who are so tired from shopping non-stop from Thursday (before the turkey even gets cold) through Small Business Saturday might need to crash on the couch and just veg out with their laptops, tablets and phones. Seriously? If they’ve been shopping non-stop since mid-Thursday, I doubt they’re going to be terribly interested in researching tomorrow’s shopping.

I just don’t see the name sticking. Some clever mind will come up with something a bit more catchy before long. I hope…

Cyber Prepping

Okay, let’s run with the notion that “Sofa Sunday” is a day to prepare for the actual shopping that’s to take place on Cyber Monday.

If you don’t know where you’re going, you will probably end up somewhere else. ~Laurence J. Peter

The point is that you need to have an idea of what you’d like to buy. The hazard of internet research of any kind is that one thing leads to another. If you don’t have a specific goal in mind, you’re going to wind up with a hundred tabs open on everything from dog sweaters to the applications of quantum physics in translating cuneiform tablets.

To save you a bit of wandering, you’ll want to identify your favorite shopping sites. Those sites have a variety of methods of communication with you. Social media, email lists, discount clubs and store credit cards will provide avenues for these retailers to provide you with coupons and notification of sale dates and times.

Naturally, Amazon is the prime starting point for most holiday cyber-shoppers because there will be a lot of special offers. NewEgg is another great site to shop for online offers, particularly electronics and appliances.

Big chain stores such as Walmart, Target, Best Buy and Gamestop are sure to offer special deals for shop-weary sofa surfers.

When you’ve picked your favorite retailers, you can then compare prices between them to find the absolute best deal on the must-have items on your wish list. On the other hand, you can always go to sites that specialize in comparing online deals like DealNewsFinder.com or Cybermonday.com.

If you’re looking for some shopping incentives, you can make use of cash reward sites like Ebates, Mr. Rebates, Shop at Home or SwagBucks.

Other Things To Do On The Sofa

As I mentioned earlier, you might just be tuckered out from all that shopping or from traveling a distance to see relatives for Thanksgiving dinner. Heck, you might just be pre-emptively tired from having to go back to work tomorrow. If you’re:

  • done shopping
  • tired of shopping
  • don’t care about shopping
  • don’t have anybody to shop for
  • generally disinterested in buying things

…you might consider some other things you might do on that sofa of yours.

Put On Some Tunes And Snuggle Up

If you can stand to tune out and wrap a blanket around you and your special someone, you might want to put on some festive seasonal music and watch the yule log burn. Here are some great selections for you:

However you choose to spend your “Sofa Sunday“, I hope you have a lovely holiday weekend and get some R&R.
