Peace On Earth, Good Will To Men
This familiar refrain from so many popular Christmas songs was the angel choir’s greeting to the shepherds on the hillside.
Glory To God In The Highest
14 Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.
~Luke 2:14
In the various versions of the Nativity in the New Testament, angels appear as messengers from God.
When they say “Glory to God in the highest“, the angels are making a statement about who they serve and on whose behalf they have been sent bearing news.
It’s a commonly held tenet of Christianity that we cannot attain the Glory of God due to our fallible nature, but that we should at all times aspire to it.
Whether or not you are spiritually inclined, there’s always room to listen to the “better angels of our nature” and make the world a better place simply because it’s the right thing to do.
And On Earth Peace
December 10th is the date that Alfred Nobel passed on. It is on this day that the Nobel Peace Prize is awarded each year. This year, the prize is being shared by Ms. Nadia Murad and Dr. Denis Mukwege for their work to end the use of sexual violence as a weapon of war.
Ms. Murad is an Iraqi Yazidi who was captured and taken as a sex slave by the Islamic State in Iraq and now works as a human rights advocate.
Dr. Mukwege is a gynecologist from the Democratic Republic of the Congo who specializes in the treatment of women and girls who have been the victims of sexual violence.
Each of them in their own way has helped to give greater visibility to war-time sexual violence, so that the perpetrators can be held accountable for their actions, so that the perpetrators can be held accountable for their actions.

The prize of 9 Million Swedish Kronor will be shared between the two recipients. Ms. Murad plans to share her award “with Yazidis, Iraqis, Kurds, other persecuted minorities and all of the countless victims of sexual violence around the world” and will be thinking of her mother, who was slain by Islamic State militants. Dr. Mukwege will dedicate his half of the award to “the women of all the countries of the world wounded by conflict and confronted by violence every day.”.
Good Will Toward Men
At the 217th Plenary Meeting of the United Nations General Assembly in 1950, the formal establishment of Human Rights Day was decreed with resolution 423(V) to commemorate the 1948 adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
Former First Lady, Eleanor Roosevelt, served as Chairperson of the drafting committee of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. She was appointed as a delegate to the United Nations in 1946 by President Harry S. Truman.
This year is the 70th anniversary and there will be a televised panel discussion on the relevance of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights to today’s cutting-edge human rights issues of inequality, climate change and new technologies at UN Headquarters.
