Xmas Apps

As the saying goes, “There’s an app for that.” and that includes Christmas! People are practically glued to their smartphones these days, so it’s absolutely natural that the app stores would rise to the occasion.

Tech At Christmastime

I’m a physicist, and we have something called Moore’s Law, which says computer power doubles every 18 months. So every Christmas, we more or less assume that our toys and appliances are more or less twice as powerful as the previous Christmas. ~Michio Kaku

Since the days of the first electric Christmas tree lights and train sets, technology has kept a steady pace with the holiday season.

These days we enjoy high tech holiday treats in both the physical and the virtual worlds. There are funny holiday themes that can be applied to your computer desktop, email skin, phone or tablet desktop. Twinkly lights, blowing snow, dancing reindeer or snowmen can be added to websites with a couple of clicks.

Christmas music has also evolved from vinyl and tape to CD but now you can get dedicated Christmas music channels to stream for you on demand!

As for apps, there are smartphone apps that will mind your shopping list, decorate your phone, record or schedule calls from Santa and so much more.

Of course, where you find your apps depends on what kind of phone you have.

Android

If you have a phone with an Android operating system, you’ll need to go to the Google Play Store to find your apps. It’s an easy search to find Christmas-related apps on Google’s site. Since that’s my preferred platform, I’m more familiar with the Google Play site.

One of my very favorite apps is Portable North Pole. Powered by the site of the same name, this app will let you schedule and play customized videos from Santa Claus. You can select your kids’ names, gift preferences and other details that will let Santa perform a very personalized message for your loved ones.

Apple

My wife and kids live on their iPhones, so they’d find their holiday apps on the Apple App Store. Personally, I couldn’t find what I was looking for using the site’s search function so I looked for some recommendations from people who are more Apple-savvy than I.

The one that caught my eye was the Dr. Seuss Camera – The Grinch Edition app. It allows you to create Grinchified greeting cards and silly photos to add to your digital memories. You might find others that you prefer.

Whether you use an iPhone or an Android, there are plenty of busy programmers trying to keep you entertained and provide some useful tools to help you get through the holidays with a smile on your face. For those of us who need low-tech ideas for the holidays, I’ve included this video for your enjoyment.
