Good Things Come In Small Businesses
Did you shop ’til you dropped yesterday? If so, chances are that you took advantage of the big promotions put on by the big chain stores.
That’s great, but how about helping out the little guys?
What Is Small Business Saturday?
Small Business Saturday was founded in 2010 by American Express to support small businesses and the communities they serve.
The Saturday after Thanksgiving Day is a great day to get out and support your favorite independent retailers. Don’t forget to enjoy a meal at some of your fine local restaurants while you’re out Christmas shopping!
How To Support Small Business Saturday
Small businesses represent 99.9% of commerce in the US according to Forbes. They provide jobs, pay taxes and sponsor a wide variety of community initiatives.
Since Small Business Saturday is intended as a community event, you can check a variety of sites to see what’s going on in your area. Check with your local Chamber of Commerce or sites like Evensi or the American Express – Merchant Maps to find special deals and events that are scheduled today.
If you’re like me and you don’t really like going out at all, you’ll also find that quite a few of the vendors on Amazon Storefronts, eBay and Etsy are sole proprietorships or small businesses. It’s great to shop local, but it’s also great to support entrepreneurs wherever they are.
Near Me
As I mentioned above, Evensi has listings for local events on the day you select. Within 20 miles of my home, I’m seeing 37 events today. Some of those are specifically Small Business Saturday events in:

Pottsville
The Pottsville Free Public Library is hosting the Small Business Saturday event again this year.
The Pottsville Free Public Library will be hosting authors, crafters, and direct sales vendors on Small Business Saturday, November 24th, from 10 AM until 4 PM. Spaces are open to everyone equally; preference will not be given to one group over another. The fee is the same as in the past, $20 for a six-foot space. All registrations with payment MUST be received by November 12, 2018 to give us sufficient advertising time.
We will accept registration from one direct sales representative per company. Direct sales companies accepted for the library’s SBS Vendor Fair will be listed on this Event page under the “Discussion” tab.
The Pottsville Library will be planning additional events for the day, as well as working with the Pottsville Business Association for downtown activities.
Contact the Reference Librarian at the Pottsville Free Public Library at potref@pottsvillelibrary.org to request a registration form.
Another interesting event is taking place at the Hope Hill Lavender Farm outside of Pottsville.
November 24th is Small Business Saturday! Come out and support small businesses of Schuylkill County. Visit Hope Hill Lavender Farm and enjoy complimentary lavender tastings while you shop.
Hope Hill Lavender Farm provides quality lavender products produced from essential oil distilled on our farm since 2011. Enjoy shopping in our heated farm store filled with our products, local artist products and Made in The USA products. We are a PA Preferred and Home Grown by Heroes farm.
Evensi is also listing a number of Christmas craft markets today as well. If you’re in my neck of the woods, you can click this link to check them all out (but you’ll have to move the slider from 5km to 32km to see my 20 mile radius). If you live elsewhere, you can go to the Evensi home site to find events in your local area.
